Bond 25 is set for a 2020 release and will be Daniel Craig’s final film as the man behind the martini. The film brings Maniac and True Detective director Cary Joji Fukunaga in to round out the Blonde Bond Saga. Neal Purvis and Robert Wade return to write yet another Bond film with the help of The Bourne Ultimatum’s Scott Z. Burns. Phoebe Walker-Bridge and the director himself are also credited in the script as they take Bond back to Jamaica.
The last Bond flick to be shot on the Caribbean island was Sean Connery’s Dr. No back in 1962. Daniel Craig’s Bond run has not been afraid to dive back into the spy’s past, rather than treat the new actor as a seperate 007. Skyfall saw him returning to a place that he was not ready to see again. It brought depth to the character that previous films may not have attempted. The very next film Spectre went even further and brought back the legendary villain Blofeld as Bond’s non-biological brother, essentially. They tie-up the call back train with this stop at a familiar location to our hero. It will be interesting to see Bond back on the island and how they have it relate to the character’s past.
Rami Malek, fresh off of his award winning acclaim for Bohemian Rhapsody, joins the gang to play the new big bad for the franchise’s 25th release. The details of the villain are top secret at the moment, but I’m willing to bet this will be a new look at Jamaica’s very own Dr. No. Ralph Fiennes and Ben Whishaw return as M and Q. Jeffrey Wright and Naomie Harris will also be back as MI6’s Lieter and Moneypenny. For the first time in 007 history, a Bond Girl will be returning for a larger role as Lea Seydoux’s Madeleine Swan will be back with the crew as well. She told IMDB “I like the fact that I’m not a sexual object…” indicating a tonal shift with the times for the James Bond franchise.
I am excited to see what this chapter of Bond has in store for us and how they will bid adieu to my generation’s Bond, the great Daniel Craig. Speculation always flies around in regards to the next Bond. Personally, the best choices I’ve heard are Idris Elba, Tom Hardy and Hayley Atwell for a Jane Bond switcharoo. In any case, we have a big finale coming before then for everyone to enjoy.
Who is your favorite Bond? What 007 film is your favorite?
