Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures have come together and backed a reboot of the Saw movie franchise. Comedian Chris Rock approached them with a script that will reimagine the Saw story and it is being adapted into an official screenplay by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg (Piranha 3D). Chris Rock will be the film’s executive producer. Rock is a self-proclaimed Saw fan and used this as a way to place a new spin on the horror genre in the same way that Eddie Murphy changed the buddy cop movie game with 48 Hours. This may be his Jordan Peele moment of expanding his brand to more than just laughs.
Horror film franchises have been rebooting many properties lately including Child’s Play and Halloween. This should be an interesting rebrand, seeing as the Saw franchise has been active in sequels as recently as 2017 with the movie Jigsaw. Goldfinger actually wrote the script for that film, as well. The original film, released back in 2004, changed the horror genre by popularizing torture movies and containing one of cinema’s most shocking endings.
Different sources have reported the film to be a complete reboot, while others have reported that it will be a spin-off. The details are uncertain. The film is set to release on October 23rd, 2020. Just in time for next year’s Halloween.
Do you like the Saw franchise? Does Chris Rock’s involvement excite or worry you?
