During the brief time that Disney and Marvel had fired Guardians Of The Galaxy writer and director James Gunn, he was scooped up by DC Comics to write and direct the sequel/reboot to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. The previous film had loads of negative press and criticism from both the industry and the fans, so a redo was well needed. While the movie will feature some of the same characters from the first film, it will be more of a separate entity than a sequel. Exhibit A would be the name of the film, which is currently The Suicide Squad.
The lack of indication that the film is a second part to a larger story is not the only change, however. Most of the cast members will not be returning to the film. The only ones who are include Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and unofficially it has been stated that Margot Robbie will be returning as Harley Quinn. We have to assume that the success and reception of Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emanciation Of One Harley Quinn will factor heavily into whether or not DC brings her character back for the project. Will Smith, who played Deadshot, was called back for the sequel but will not be returning do to scheduling conflicts. Recently it was made public that Joel Kinnaman will be returning, as well, to play the squad’s ringleader Rick Flag.
Aside from our returning cast, a few new actors will be stepping into the fold. The most prominent of which being Idris Elba. Elba was initially brought on to take up the mantle of Deadshot in Will Smith’s absence. This was later changed by James Gunn who announced that Elba will be playing an entirely different character for the film. Another Marvel actor stepping into the DC lineup is David Dastalmachian (Ant Man) who will be playing Polka-Dot Man. A villainous Batman foe who uses colorful polka-dots as deadly weapons. Let’s hope James Gunn has a half-decent plan for that. WWE Superstar John Cena is reportedly working on the film in an unknown role that some believe to be the character Peacekeeper. Cena has heightened his Hollywood catalog over the past few years with prominent roles in films like Trainwreck and Bumblebee. Lastly, foreign actress Daniela Melchoir has been listed as Ratcatcher. Ratcatcher is a Gotham City criminal who specialized in poisonous gases and, well… rats.
Some rumored actors on the project include Benicio Del Toro as a villain named “The Mayor.” Jared Leto is also rumored to be a part of the project as well as the Birds of Prey film. Whether or not these two films coincide remains to be seen. No one really knows if Leto’s Joker will ever reappear. Many speculate that Idris Elba will be playing Sportsmaster or Deathstroke, replacing Joe Manganiello. There was recently a casting call put out for a young actress to play “Drew,” the daughter of Elba’s character. One recent casting rumor that was put to rest by the actor himself was the casting of Michael Rooker as King Shark. He and Gunn have a good relationship from working on the Guardians Of The Galaxy films, but he took to the internet to clear the air that this is only a rumor. The role of King Shark was reportedly being held for Dave Bautista at one point, but scheduling conflicts removed him from the equation. None of these rumors have been confirmed as of yet.
The other big question is how, if at all, will the movie fit into the great Worlds of DC Universe? The universe timeline is a bit wonky with the recasting of Batman and inevitable recasting of Superman. While Gal Gadot and Jason Mamoa continue to portray Wonder Woman and Aquaman, the Flash and Cyborg films have been officially cancelled and there is no confirmed plan to bring these characters back any time soon. Then, there is Shazam! The insanely popular and well-received Zachary Levi film that revitalized the DC film world. With their references to Cavill’s Superman, it is a wonder if these movies will be connected at all.
The Suicide Squad is set to release in August of 2021. Who would you like to see cast in the film?
