In the midst of Disney’s live-action era, they have finally selected their lead actor for The Little Mermaid. The film had been planned as one of their earliest live-action remakes with Chloë Grace Moretz being cast as Ariel. The film fizzled out and Moretz backed out of the project. The studio went on with other projects in the meantime including Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin and the upcoming Mulan. Years later, they have placed everyone’s favorite thingamabob collector at the top of their list for the next live-action film to begin production. Disney has just recently announced who the starring role will go to.
Halle Bailey is a 19 year old actor mostly known for her role in the popular TV show Grown-ish. Bailey is just the type of young and upbeat star to bring life and magic to the beloved mermaid. Of course, like with any slight change in recent film and TV, there are people on the internet baffled at the choice of a black actor portraying an originally white character. These are the same people who probably ruined our chances of every getting Idris Elba to play James Bond or Michael B. Jordan as Superman. Despite all of that, Bailey took to Instagram to show her excitement:
Other cast members include Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay as Scuttle and Flounder. Melissa McCarthy is also rumored to be portraying Ursula. No release date has been announced for the project.
